Person On The Street: Drinking Coffee With Paper Straws In Boston University

Prodded by Students, Boston University started to use paper straws instead of plastic ones since this year. So as the three Starbucks Coffee shops in the University's area. Among the five interviewed students, some support the idea because it does well for our environment under today's dramatic climate change, while others point out that the quality of paper straws make the straws lose their basic function: to help drink coffees.

Cecilia Webber, a student from College of Arts and Science, said she thinks it is a good idea. "If there are other environmental effects that using paper makes actually more negative than plastic ones which I would know... but I assume that using paper is better for the environment, so I think it is a good idea."

Naomi Chinama, a student from the College of Arts and Science, also works at the Starbucks Store in Questrom School of Business building. She believes the effects of using paper straws for protecting the environment. "Even something as small as the straws can make a really big difference. I think it is great."

Mike Han, another student from the College of Arts and Science, said that from the convenience aspect, he is not a fan of using paper straws. "When you leave the drinks for several minutes, it tends to get soft very quickly. I think it is really hard to use. So I prefer plastic straws."

Whether the students prefer the plastic straws or not, the University has already phrase them out of the campus. One can't find a plastic straw even in the dinning hall. However, there are still a small amount of plastic straws available for students who have special needs. If you are not a fan of paper straw for any reason, the best way to solve the problem right now may be bringing your own recycling cups to the coffee store.
